Jon Riki vs. C-3PO’s evil cousin

Filed under: Hawaii State Politics — Doug @ 11:20 am

Just when I had thought that perhaps his blog had hit a plateau in its, well, slowly-escalating oddity, there comes this new post at Representative Karamatsu’s blog. Wow. A tour de force in bizarro rambling! Now, a post like that is less amusing coming from the Chair(!) of the Judiciary Committee than if it were from some random powerless “everyman,” but it still cracks me up.

Now, the fun part. Which male “elected leader” is 5P8C , and what is the issue at stake? Karamatsu says this all went down on Thursday, which is the same day his “Juiciary” committee passed out the Civil Unions bill. Karamatsu’s post mentions that this was his first meeting with 5P8C, which would make him most likely to be a freshman legislator.

So, which is a line from the Star Wars scripts, and which is from a political blog?

Choice A:

Only destiny will reveal 5P8C’s superior counterpart. I have learned that there will always be someone stronger, smarter, and better than you no matter what you think. If you fight negative energy with negative energy, sooner or later you will lose.

Choice B:

A: Your thoughts betray you, Father. I feel the good in you, the conflict.
B: There is no conflict.
A: You couldn’t bring yourself to kill me before and I don’t believe you’ll destroy me now.
B: You underestimate the power of the Dark Side. If you will not fight, then you will meet your destiny.

I reckon this is what happens when too many people have those silly iPhone lightsabers! I don’t even have a cell phone. Sigh.

UPDATE: 5P8C is indeed Honolulu Prosecutor Peter Carlisle, according to a new blog post by Derrick DePledge.

  1. My vote is that he is referring to Honolulu Prosecutor Peter Carlisle.

The sub-positioning of the “5″ is consistent with the fact that Carlisle is in his 4th term. “P8C” is pretty close to the initials for “Peter Benson Carlisle”, his persecutor-ness.

    Other clues?

“[H]e threatened me that he will come after me if I don’t agree with him like he did with the Judiciary chairs before me.” Carlisle has been pretty free over the years with accusations that those who don’t agree with him are either communists or incarnate devils. And that means anyone who believes that civil liberties must be part of the equation when considering public safety measures like wiretapping or structural changes like information charging, etc.

“Now, this is a person who fights for good against evil, yet is arrogant and mean-spirited like those he is fighting against.” In Carlisle’s simplistic “all is either black or white world”, everything is reduced to the battle of good against evil and if you’re not with him, you’re against him. Hmmm, sounds like a guy we just replaced as president. Arrogant? Check. Mean spirited? Check.

“This guy just has to fight and no matter what he does, he will always look good in the public. I think he believes he is invincible because he feels he has the law on his side.” Carlisle’s is a litigator, fighting is what they do. When you’re prosecuting bad guys, you always look good because the bad guys are, well, bad (even if they are also poor, uneducated, minorities, etc. but when you have “truth and justice” on your side, who cares about the details). Carlisle DOES have the law on his side; that’s his job, enforcing it.

DOUG: You make a very good case, Ted. I reckon you’re right.

  2. Oh, the reference to prior Judiciary chairs as having agreed with him is also consistent with Carlisle having been allowed to pursue piecemeal amendment of the constitution as a way of overruling Hawaii Supreme Court opinions with which he and his far-more intelligent and probably more dangerous sidekick, Mark Bennett, disagree. Less than unanimous jury verdicts, rules of evidence that nowhere else in the country are placed in a constitution, you name it.

  3. In my dealings with Karamatsu I have been impressed with his sincere desire to do the right thing. A sort of naivete you are making fun of in your post. You see his idiom as Star Wars-y. I hear in it Zen influenced martial arts.

I would suggest we rise above his idiom to hear what he is wrestling with. In this matter of civil unions, he has demonstrated a great deal of courage for such a young man. I wish him well and, I guess, feel a bit protective of him.

That being said, I cannot help but wonder who the Darth Vader-ish character might have been. To the best of my knowledge, Peter Carlisle was not present for the Civil Unions bill heard that day and it was the only item on the agenda. I would assume Vader would have been threatening him over civil unions. If it were an elected official annoyed about CUs, the list which springs to mind is kinda small. Perhaps the LG?

DOUG: The LG. Hmmm. Another good guess as to who might be 5P8C. And, on the “Zen” theory, have a look at the rest of Karamatsu’s blog and there’s lots of that kine stuff.

  4. I would go with the Carlisle hunch, if we are assuming the visit had nothing to do with the Thursday hearing. Clearly, Carlisle has reason to meet with Karamatsu on a range of Judiciary Cte matters. Karamatsu said this was the first time he met him, something more likely to be true about Carlisle than Duke Aiona. After all, until Karamatsu became chair of the Judiciary committee, Carlisle would have no reason to meet with him. As LG, Aiona likely would have met Karamatsu sometime during the last six years.

  5. The entire account has been deleted from Jon Riki’s ‘blog, the core part having been preserved only in a quote on DePledge’s ‘blog. The link from his ‘blog back to JR’s yields only this: “Sorry, the page you are looking for does not exist”.

I like JR, believe him to be smart enuf, and think he wants to do the right thing. I also think his advert to Buddhist and other Eastern thinking is as good a way as any to find the strength necessary to remain calm in the middle of the Judiciary Committee storm.

Still, I get no satisfaction in having been “right” about “5P8C”. I feel more like I’ve gone down a rabbit hole in “Alice in Wonderland” where things just keep getting “curiouser and curiouser”.

OK, I’m gonna go channel Lewis Carroll to figure out how it all ends.

DOUG: Shoots, I suspected that I should have cached that post locally… oh well.

  6. The following is Representative Karamatsu’s post, now deleted from his blog, courtesy of the Google cache:

    ———————————

This will be my first entry about any individual that crossed my line of compassion. There are people who make it difficult to attain enlightenment or the highest level of compassion. When swords are drawn, I have pretty consistently stayed on the side of calmness, forgiveness, and compassion. However, this time was the first time, I have ever felt compelled to draw my sword on any elected leader. Politics attracts so many enemies, even though all I want to do is work on policy to help people and our world. By just accepting the Judiciary Chairmanship, I have attracted another level of enemies. This individual is one of them. Now, I clearly understand the battle I inherited from my predecessors, previous House Judiciary chairs.

In my life, I have been yelled at, sweared at, and even had my life threatened. In my six and a half years in political office, I must have had at least a thousand meetings at my office with individuals or groups of people. On Thursday, February 5, 2009, I had a meeting with 5P8C at my office at his request. I was ready to work with him with an open mind. However, his actions instantly changed my view. In his own words, he threatened me that he will come after me if I don’t agree with him like he did with the Judiciary chairs before me. I was shocked, considering this was my first meeting with this guy who is a couple decades older than me. Now, this is a person who fights for good against evil, yet is arrogant and mean-spirited like those he is fighting against. I just met this guy and he is already threatening me and trying to push around what power he has or thinks he has. He really tested my will. Most in the general public probably has no idea how mean-spirited and childish he is. Us “real” politicians have to always struggle in finding balance for society. We have constituents and community leaders pulling us at all angles to make a decision. This guy just has to fight and no matter what he does, he will always look good in the public. I think he believes he is invincible because he feels he has the law on his side. Only destiny will reveal 5P8C’s superior counterpart who will contribute to his downfall. I have learned that there will always be someone stronger, smarter, and better than you no matter what you think. If you fight negative energy with negative energy, sooner or later you will lose. Rather, you must take negative energy and come back a thousandfold stronger with positive energy. He told me, “Everything you learned in law school doesn’t apply. It is all about justice.” Basically, his view of jusice is an “eye for eye” or if you kill me, I will kill you. With his theory, since he is trying to take me out, I can take him out and anyone else who tries. There is a fine line between good and evil. He is delicately dancing back and forth over this fine line. Power, anger, selfishness, and his yearning for public attention has clouded his vision. Sometimes, what appears as good can actually be evil. Now, I am being drawn to engage in this battle, and if I am not careful, I could find myself dancing on this fine line as well. I seriously need to meditate and bring my focus towards compassion despite his lure to draw me into battle.

  7. Don Tiki Karamatsu is now clearly operating the ship autonomously from the Jon Riki persona we see. In a way it is good, it means he isn’t psychotic and his psyche is really protecting himself from the vicious over-identified persona that thinks is steering the ship. The question is, will he give his soul a rest and move onto something more fulfilling in his life, or will Jon Riki continue to run the show? I suspect that the evidence from his blog that we are about to get more New Age jingoism to try to mend the rift between persona and self.

5P8C was the perfect target for Jon Riki’s projections, by the way. Talk about a two dimensional caricature of a personality.
