Opening Day Hawaii Legislature 2009

  1. That’s MaBel Fujiuchi from Kauai! All I know is that I see her occasionally in pictures of a board or public service event in the Garden Island. And I’ve encountered her a couple of times in public.

  2. What’s up with that hairdo? That’s pretty gross.

  3. I saw her on the way out of a Kauai legislator’s office and, as I squeezed by her, I said instinctively “Nice Hair!” the way you would to someone at a Halloween party who had obviously invested a tremendous amount of time in a very, shall we say, different look. When I realized that maybe she was not trying to look different I picked up the pace and hit the stairwell without looking back!

  4. MaBell- pronounced like the phone company- is the ED of Kaua`i Economic Opportunity (KEO) a social service NGO that gets the bulk of county social service money when they are privatized. Same goes for the state and federal privatized social services They administrate things like the LIHEAP energy program, a homeless shelter WIC , Head Start. They’ve been around since the 70’s or before- very well connected.

She’s worn that crazy thing on her head since she was a teen so people on Kaua`i are so used to it they don’t even notice it these days.

  5. She has been around for forever. The big question I have always had and no one can answer is:

  8. Yes, MaBel (pronounced Maybell) is a fixture on Kauai, and very dedicated to helping others. When I interviewed her, I did not think it appropriate to inquire about her hair, although several people later said they really wished that I had.
